Omayra
wall painting / 2004

A semi-transparent, watered down medium gray stroke forms a hardly visible image on the wall of the gallery: the face and arms of Omayra Sánchez, a young Colombian girl. In 1985, during a flood provoked by a volcanic eruption, the little girl’s legs were trapped under water.
Omayra’s situation captivated the attention of audiences worldwide, following her story on screen for three long days. Television networks set their cameras and microphones around an immobilized Omayra and created suspenseful episodes with her reality, until the moment of her death. This was probably the first sequence of reality TV that I witnessed.
